Life’s like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get. And yet, when it comes to chocolates, taking that uncertainty out of the equation would not be so difficult to do.
If Shazam can recognize any song ever released, how difficult would it be for a ‘master chocolatier’ to develop an app that could identify all of their signature chocolates? Simply by scanning the chocolate with your smartphone, all the information about the chocolate you could imagine, would pop up: name of the creation, type of chocolate, specific blend, taste profile, keynotes, name of the cocoa bean(s), list of the ingredients,… Clicking through could lead you to a series of related videos such as the plantations of the specific cocoa beans, the production process, a personal explanation from the master chocolatier, food & drink pairing suggestions … Watch the videos on your smartphone or tablet, or send them to your virtual reality glasses for an extra dimension.
You would be able to rate each chocolate you taste and store your preferences for later. Given sufficient data points, an AI could build your personal chocolate profile. And obviously, the more you taste and rate, the more accurate your profile will be in predicting the best creations for you.
In turn your ‘chocolate profile’ would be the engine that drives your ‘chocolate discovery subscription’. A ‘chocolate discovery subscription’ could facilitate the transition to a more frequent, lower volume and higher quality chocolate consumption. Imagine a weekly or monthly ‘chocolate discovery box’, sent to your home, with your favorite chocolates and exclusive (members only) and limited-edition creations in avant-première, tailored to your personal taste via your ‘chocolate profile’ and reinforced by inspiring content in virtual reality. Your ‘chocolate discovery subscription’ allows you to discover chocolate creations that you (probably) will like. And now and again a suggestion from the category 'something completely different' to keep it fresh.
Such an accurate chocolate profile offers the chocolate creator a myriad of business and product opportunities. Imagine a birthday surprise creation 'especially for you’, or a ‘custom-made’ chocolate for the bridal couple? Once rolled out on a larger scale, one will know the taste of the Belgian market and a range of sub-segments. Potential applications are countless. A tailor-made chocolate for every major Belgian city? Easy. Or for the Proximus company party? Check. Perhaps in a purple wrap…
Data is the new chocolate. And Forrest Gump will have to find a new catch phrase…
